The New City Artist-in-Residence program is a five-month residency that provides a local artist with free, downtown studio space, a small stipend, and connection to the Charlottesville arts community. Applications for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 residencies are now open. To apply, fill out this form and send a CV and three work samples to Lindsey. The deadline to submit a proposal is Tuesday, May 1 at 11:59PM.

Applications to exhibit at Welcome Gallery are also now open. We are currently accepting submissions for the fall 2018 – spring 2019 exhibit season. Learn more about Welcome Gallery exhibits and how to apply here.

The residency is open to artists of all disciplines (visual artists, writers, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers).

New City Artists-in-Residence are given full, free access to our studio, which is located adjacent to Welcome Gallery and our New City Arts office on the historic Downtown Mall, and receive a small stipend to help cover the cost of materials and parking. Additionally, visual artists are given a month-long exhibition at Welcome Gallery and artists of other disciplines are given support for a special performance.

The studio is private, though the nature of the residency encourages artists to take an active and public role in the organization, including being present at First Fridays events, which serve as an “open studio” for artists to share their work with the community. We ask that artists spend a minimum of 15 hours a week in the studio and that they lead one small event (a workshop, community sing, drawing session, etc.) during their residency.

Candidates must live in the Charlottesville area during the residency program. Preference is given to applicants with specific project goals for the five month residency period.

For information about past resident artists, visit our Artist Alumni page.

Free studio (approximately 9’x16’6″) with a pocket door for privacy, wall space for displaying works in progress, a small stipend to cover material and parking costs, high-speed fiber internet provided by Ting, a multi-function printer, and a shared kitchen and bathroom. You get to share the space with a Fiddle Leaf Fig.

All are welcome to attend our (free) Pi Day Open House Wednesday, March 14th (10AM-6PM) to enjoy a slice of free pie, see the spaces (studio and gallery), and meet the New City Arts staff.
