During this pandemic, nurses have risen to the challenge. And we can take pride in the nurses who gained their skills from their studies at UVA. With this drawing, I aim to bring to light my role as a UVA student nurse. As student nurses we spend time at the bedside, learning skills but also comforting our patients, meeting them eye to eye to provide patient-centered care. With drawing media, I recreate a patient care memory always hovering right by my shoulder to remind me of my reason for choosing UVA and for choosing nursing as a career. I chose an illustrative approach to evoke a sense of that memory. I eliminated the masks that would be worn in a scene like this today to highlight the facial expressions of patient and student nurse. This student nurse looks on with determination, concern, and pride for the work ahead. This drawing is a portrait of a UVA student and of connection to purpose.
