UVA Arts & Art in Library Spaces Call for Proposals

In conjunction with UVA Arts, the UVA Library’s Art in Library Spaces Committee is accepting proposals for art to be displayed in the Shannon Library’s second-floor gallery. The Art in Library Spaces program is committed to upholding the Library’s values through creating inclusive artistic spaces that strengthen a sense of belonging for all individuals at the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville community. 

Details

• Eligibility: The call is open to University of Virginia faculty and staff working independently or collaboratively. 
• Prize: $5,000 paid to your department to fulfill the project. Any leftover funds may be used as research funds as you see fit.
• The second-floor gallery space has two walls each with available two-dimensional installation space up to 12’ wide and 8’ high (See an image of Amy Chan’s Double Happiness, the inaugural installation, above.)  Ideally both walls would be used in the installation. 
  • The work can be hung or adhered with removable vinyl, however it cannot be painted directly onto the wall. 
  • We are working on creating a space for digital work, but unfortunately, that is not available at this time. 
• The selected work(s) will be on loan to the Library and will be displayed for the calendar year (Jan-Dec).  The work will be returned to the artist at the conclusion of the term. 
• The Library will provide assistance transporting, installing and labeling the piece. 
• The Library will host an opening reception, with a brief talk, and will aid in programming around the piece in conjunction with the artist.

Proposal Requirements:

• Project Title
• Brief Bio of Artist(s)
• An artistic plan of the work or photographs of the completed piece
• Description of work, including material, size and installation requirements
• A brief response about the ways in which your work expresses belonging and inclusivity
  • If selected, you will be asked to provide a brief statement for the label 

Submission Deadline: Submissions should be sent to Emma Terry by end of day, October 28. The artist(s) will be notified by Tuesday, November 5. 

Project Deadline:  The selected piece must be completed and ready to be installed by January 2, 2025.
