38th Virginia Film Festival to Include Springsteen Biopic, ‘Frankenstein’ and More

This year’s Virginia Film Festival, running from Oct. 22 to 26, will screen more than 100 feature-length and short films and feature guests like “Sinners” star Miles Caton and the Emmy-winning “Succession” title theme composer Nicholas Britell. The festival’s opening night film, “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” stars Golden Globe-winning actor Jeremy Allen White as the Boss. Festival advisory board member Scott Cooper directed the movie, which tells the story behind Bruce Springsteen’s album “Nebraska,” including the singer’s experience with depression during his rise to stardom.

From the Corner to the Red Carpet: This Hoo’s Latest Short Film Wins Award

Of the careers Emily Dhue considered growing up, filmmaker might have been the most practical. “In third grade, I wanted to be a famous actress. I had a brief stint in fifth grade where I wanted to be a dolphin trainer. Then I was lost for a while, and thought, ‘Maybe I’ll do film,’” Dhue said. That thought is paying off. Since graduating from the University of Virginia in 2020, Dhue has started her own production company with her friend Zac Branciforte, Space Fish Productions; made music videos for bands like Not Proud To Be Here; and most recently, won the Best Horror award for her short film, “Bill,” at the HollyShorts Film Festival.

Virginia Film Festival Announces 2025 Lineup

The Festival’s Opening Night Film is Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere (20th Century Studios), starring Jeremy Allen White and directed by VAFF Advisory Board member and Virginia native Scott Cooper. The film tells the captivating story behind the making of the worldwide musical and cultural icon’s celebrated album Nebraska at a time when he was battling mental health issues and working to come to terms with his growing fame.

The Virginia Film Festival Returns in Full Force This October

As the month of October looms on the horizon, that can only mean one thing for the city of Charlottesville — the Virginia Film Festival is making its return. The 38th annual iteration of one of the eastern seaboard’s most reputable festivals draws cinephiles and industry professionals alike to Charlottesville. From Oct. 22 through Oct. 26, the festival will bring together more than 100 of the year’s best films for an incredible weekend celebrating the cinematic art.

Charlottesville Area Arts Council Planning Project Announces Steering Committee Members

A broad cross-section of artists, cultural workers, and community leaders has been selected to serve on the Steering Committee for the Charlottesville Area Arts Council planning project. The Steering Committee will guide the community-driven process to explore the creation of a future Arts Council for the Charlottesville area. Their role is to provide insight, ensure broad community perspectives are represented, and co-create recommendations for how a future Arts Council can equitably serve the city’s diverse arts and culture ecosystem. The committee members were chosen from a pool of 59 applications submitted by local artists, organizers, educators, administrators, and community supporters.

Books and Films for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15 each year, celebrates the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the U.S. To celebrate this month, we’re recommending a few books and films that highlight different aspects of the Hispanic/Latino experience. All are available through the UVA Library via the links provided. Note that the first two novels mentioned here can be found in the Popular Books collection on the fourth floor of Shannon Library, which features several hundred recent fiction and non-fiction titles, primarily for pleasure reading.

Maupintown Film Festival Looks Into History Through the Eyes of Black Filmmakers

The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center hosted the 12th annual Maupintown Film Festival Sep. 5-7. The event primarily showcases the works of up and coming African American filmmakers while also giving a space to talk about the themes prevalent in their films. This year the theme of the festival was “Bold and Beautiful.” A showcase of African American history and culture, the movies shown were mostly documentaries with a time slot allocated on Saturday for cartoons.

Film Uses UVA Archive to Illuminate the Life of Cartoonist Patrick Oliphant

In August, the Virginia Film Festival welcomed director Bill Banowsky in conversation following a showing of his film, “A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant.” The film features archival footage and hundreds of Oliphant works, and the showing was a homecoming of sorts, since the University of Virginia Library houses Oliphant’s archive, which was critical in the making of the film.

Arts This Week: Indie Short Film Festival’s “The Price of Resistance”

Why Are Movie Reboots So Successful?

In the first episode of the Apple TV series, “The Studio,” Seth Rogen plays a Hollywood studio boss tasked with making a box-office hit and prestige film about the Kool-Aid Man. He recruits director Martin Scorsese to make the movie, only for the Oscar-winning director to become intent on making a movie about Jonestown, the cult settlement in Guyana where followers took their own lives drinking poisoned Kool-Aid.
