Affrilachia on Stage: Black Women's Place Based Performance Activism

This talk engages the pivotal contributions made by Black women storytellers in Appalachia as they advocate across race, place, and gender on stage.

Rising Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow in Drama, Dr. Yunina Barbour-Payne, historicizes and expands the genre typically considered Affrilachian artistry, arguing that Black women performance artists have been central to shaping the Affrilachian Arts Movement in the 21st Century. Focusing on perspectives, processes, and contributions of Black women performance artists across Appalachia, Barbour-Payne shows how these artists utilize their work for inspiring activism and change across regional and national social justice priorities.
