You Brown Hoppy Bun
- Gibson Hylton
you brown hoppy bun
chewing on green and purple
looking at me
painting you pink
into a picture
of a woman on a march
a meditation
a spacewalk you could call it
a cosmic gypsy
with the stride of a cowboy
and eyes like a child’s
wearing only a grand yellow hat
and pants striped green and white
walks on a world where you
float from the grass
you brown hoppy bun
Asked to submit a poem that ‘represents YOU’, this is the very first poem that came to mind. We are each vast beings that have so much left within to be explored. We are no set entity, but ever fluid, dynamic, and evolving energies. This poem describes a ‘cosmic gypsy’ , who brazenly walks the planet – in her, I see a generation of people evolving towards a more enlightened way of being – a way of being that recognizes our part in nature, that is compassionate, that recognizes power in peace. I think that current UVA students are part of this evolving – that our generation is part of a wider revolution of mindset and shifting the status quo. Making this poem, I tried to capture the essence of a peaceful revolutionary that is not motivated by fear or greed, but by wonder and beauty.
