WTJU’s annual Folk Marathon returns with daily live performances, musical deep dives

Gather Round 2024 Folk Marathon

Come gather ‘round, people, wherever you roam: From February 5 - 11, WTJU 91.1 FM’s 2024 Folk Marathon airs round-the-clock folk and roots specials from around the globe.  

“WTJU is the radio companion for this music-loving community, and our corps of volunteer DJs and special guests are putting together a raft of musical deep dives,” said Nathan Moore, WTJU General Manager. “From Richard Thompson’s soundman Simon Tassano to local favorite Michael Clem to Virginia Folklore Society recordings.”  

The Folk Marathon’s schedule includes 20 shows featuring music from around the globe, including a celebration of Kevin Donleavy’s 25 years sharing Irish and old-time music. Kevin is the author of Strings of Life, featuring conversations with old-time musicians from Virginia.  

Live performances will air on 91.1 FM, audio stream at wtju.net and smart speakers, and video stream at WTJU's Facebook Live and YouTube channels. Performances include:  

  • SILO. Monday, February 5, 8 - 9 p.m. Globally minded trad, from Ireland to Mali to Appalachia. 
  • TERRI ALLARD & GARY GREEN. Tuesday, February 6, 8 - 9 p.m. Intimate & authentic Americana. 
  • UNCLE HENRY’S FAVORITES. Wednesday, February 7, 8 - 9 p.m. Old-time string band. 
  • BUZZARD HOLLOW BOYS. Thursday, February 8, 8 - 9 p.m. Electrified folk, roots, and swing. 
  • BARLING & COLLINS. Friday, February 9, 8 - 9 p.m. Skillful, ornery noise on guitar & cello. 
  • MAMA TRIED. Saturday, February 10, 2 - 4 p.m. Grateful Dead and associated vibes 
  • ERIK “RED” KNIERIM. Saturday, February 10, 8 - 9 p.m. Distinctive-voiced singer-songwriter. 
  • WEBLEY TWIZZLE PROJECT. Sunday, February 11, 8 - 9 p.m. Unique acoustic blend.
