Honoring the contributions that African Americans have made, this year at the UVA School of Architecture we celebrate our first African American graduates, Edward Wayne Barnett (1950–2009) who received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1972 and Audrey Spencer-Horsley who received her Bachelor of City Planning in 1975.

In Andrea Trimble’s drawings, worlds merge. The built environment stakes its claim and nature presses its inevitability. Sometimes structure morphs into nature through the slender black lines that capture what she’s seen and where she’s been. “I use pen and ink mostly to depict different locations that I see in my travels, usually something that captures my eye,” Trimble said.

UVA School of Architecture is proud to announce that Elgin Cleckley, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Design Thinking, was recently named a 2021–22 Distinguished Public Scholar by the University of Virginia Office of Engagement. Cleckley was one of six UVA faculty to receive the award, which acknowledges excellent service to alumni, parents, and friends of the University.
