Emerging from a series of weekly thesis presentations by fifteen artists from the Studio Art program, the exhibition considers the color pink unbounded by the sticky connotations and associations of constructed contexts. Beyond its power to signify such disparate notions as queens and communists, innocence and excess, fleshiness and futurism, does pink have a material presence of its own? If so, what might a liberated pink make possible?

With one bare foot steering the large silver press wheel, and two hands secure around the climbing boy’s bottom, his rainboots dangling over her ash-colored shop apron, this tangle of limbs and kinetic energy somehow stands in perfect poise, producing striking prints even so. With fresh ink sinking into paper, and cotton and linen, and then resting there to stir up stories of quiet afternoons, or wild encounters, or even legends.

As different traditions of Buddhism spread across Asia in tandem with evolving political dynamics from the 17th through the 19th centuries, art of Buddhist luminaries played a pivotal role. In Earthly Exemplars: The Art of Buddhist Disciples and Teachers in Asia, The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia will exhibit works that facilitated the faith’s constant transmission across the continent from one teacher to the next, creating local versions of sacred history.

Many of UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences alumni with degrees in studio arts, drama or music go on to successful careers in arts and entertainment, in the world’s great museums or educating the next generation of creative minds. However, the number of arts majors who become leaders in business, law, technology and other areas suggests that the skills they learned in the studio and on the stage are helping them thrive in a wide range of pursuits.
As a collective of students, researchers, lawyers, artists and community partners, participants in the Sound Justice Lab will work across the boundaries of their individual disciplines and institutions to examine the impact narrative storytelling and audio-visual media can play in advocating for underrepresented individuals and communities and in shaping claims for justice for those whose stories and voices are often excluded from legal or institutional proceedings.
When the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to Indigenous Australian art launches a national touring exhibition of bark paintings in fall 2022, we can fully expect that the museum world will radically change. Traditional ways of thinking about and exhibiting works of Indigenous art will never be the same.
The Memory Project of the University of Virginia’s Democracy Initiative and its co-sponsor, the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, are pleased to announce the Charlottesville Civil Rights Bus Tour. Scheduled for June 19-26, 2022, the tour will traverse the American South to visit former plantations, Civil Rights historical sites, museums and memorials to inspire honest, inclusive narratives about the ongoing struggles for racial justice.

The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia announces the establishment of The Ruth C. Cross Endowment for Acquisitions and Collections Care. The $1 million endowment is created by the late museum donors’ family. The Fralin Museum of Art’s longstanding patron, volunteer, and friend, Ruth Cunningham Cross passed away in 2021.
