American indie rock band Mt. Joy returned to the University of Virginia on Friday evening for its second “Arts on the Hill” appearance since April 2023. The band performed an intimate set at President Jim Ryan’s Carr’s Hill home, just one day before headlining a nearly sold-out show at John Paul Jones Arena.

Describing my 2017 appointment as a faculty member, the University of Virginia dubbed me the school’s “first” hip-hop professor. Even if the job title and the historic nature of the appointment might have merited it, the word was misleading. Kyra Gaunt, a Black woman who is a foundational figure in the study of hip-hop, worked as a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Virginia from 1996 to 2002. Her book “The Games Black Girls Play,” which focuses on Black music practices, was published in 2006. I cited her in my work and in the interview I gave before accepting the job.
Can you hear that sound? It’s the WTJU Rock Marathon, a weeklong, 24-hour-a-day Rock-a-Thon airing April 7-13, designed to raise money for WTJU 91.1 FM, one of the few freeform radio stations left on the radio dial in the United States. “Ever since I came here 14 years ago, I’ve been struck by how WTJU as a whole and WTJU Rock in particular have been a beacon of independence, innovation, and creativity,” said WTJU General Manager Nathan Moore. “The 2025 Rock Marathon will push boundaries, cross genres, and create unique musical experiences for listeners of all shapes and sizes.”
With a declaration by “The Voice” host Carson Daly, University of Virginia third-year student Simone Marijic and her friend Iris Herrera began their duet, which, paradoxically, was also a faceoff.
Arts on the Hill will be held at Carr's Hill, home of President and Mrs. Ryan, on Friday, April 18th from 5-6pm (Doors will open at 4:30pm). All UVA faculty, staff, and students are eligible to enter the lottery. The deadline to enter the lottery is 11:59pm on Friday, April 11. Winners will be notified no later than 5pm on Wednesday, April 16.
