A student-favorite tradition — and one of the first of the school year — Rotunda Sing is a chance for the University’s a capella world to join forces and share their pride with the student body. 17 musical groups performed on the Lawn Wednesday, marking the 37th annual Rotunda Sing.

Former University President Jim Ryan demonstrated genuine support for student arts organizations through his attendance at countless student-organized events and administrative support over the course of his term. As the University enters a new chapter, students and alumni are reflecting on Ryan’s impact and involvement in the University arts scene, while also voicing hopes for growth, at a school where creativity and freedom of expression are deeply ingrained in the culture.

My name is Isabel. I am the WXTJ director, which means that I direct the student radio station. I help put on shows. I help put our programming together. I put on other events and stuff like that. And I’m Dana sun, WXTJ director of events and outreach. I help Isabel with putting on shows, running sound, and connecting WXTJ with the UVA student body and the Charlottesville community. WXTJ is UVA’s free form student radio. We do it all, from hosting radio shows to organizing live music events to connecting with UVA music community. WXTJ has always been about diversity and inclusion.
The UVA University Singers, the University of Virginia’s flagship choral ensemble, and faculty conductor Michael Slon recently returned from an extraordinary concert tour to the Baltics, extending UVA’s cultural reach to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Performing in five cities, the Singers had a chance to interact with distinguished musicians including composer Ēriks Ešenvalds, and members of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and National Opera Orchestra.
Our 103rd Summer Season continues at The Paramount Theater, with new pieces and old favorites. Guest artists for this show include Robert Graham, playing “Reflective Mood,” violinist Michelle Younger, playing Julia Delaney’s “Reel and The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and Band assistant director Burton Hable. Our Instrument Petting Zoo will be operating at the foot of the stage before the performance, so families with younger children can see and touch some of the instruments in the Band.
Metaphors like machines, brick-and-mortar medicine markets, talking to ghosts, and figurative and literal dope boomerang back and forth through my work. They are a constellation of symbols spiraling like the lines on a barber’s pole through lyrics, prose, and whatever other means I can make them apparent.

For Arts This Week, we spoke with the Director of Communications, Andy Pillifant, to connect with this living landmark.
Bodies flood through the narrow entrance of a basement lined with graffiti. Basses start to thud as amps enliven the space with an electrifying murmur. The tight constraints of cement columns and a low hanging ceiling tempt trouble. Once the music starts, chatter dulls and the floor breaks into an intense mosh. Exposed pipes serve as obligatory handlebars that threaten to burst with every grasp. Through the pushes and breaks, even those on the outskirts of the space become uplifted. In a fleeting rush, the singer bursts out into the chaos. Her passionate melody is invigorated by the piercing energy. No one is an outcast within this space.
Ella Fitzgerald. Dizzy Gillespie. Charles Mingus. Wynton Marsalis. Tony Bennett. Those are just some of the musical greats who have appeared at Blues Alley, the venerable Washington, D.C., jazz club in the heart of Georgetown, founded in 1965. As of Monday, you’ll be able to add Kemi Adegoroye, a 2017 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, to the list. She will perform two shows at the 125-seat venue, which bills itself as the “oldest continuing jazz supper club” in the country.
